When you are maneuvring, don't have your units in phalanx, only drop into that when you are about to actually fight. Cavalry on the flanks (or chariots), and if you have them a couple of units of elephants behind the archers and phalanx itself. Behind this I place 2 lines of archers (preferably the Cretan mercenaries, as they have longer range).

The best way I've found, and I generally play Seleucids or Carthaginians, is a set up that has all the phalanx units in a single line, with units deeper than 4 ranks.have a couple of skirmish units just in front of them, to slow down anything coming from the front, and to keep the opposition skirmishers out of range. Phalanx is great, but slow and vulnerable to the flanks and rear, as well as being troubled by missiles. 2K A Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia.844 A Total War Saga: Fall of the Samurai.
